RAS ZA'ATAR

Ras Za'atar

The steep underwater promontory of Ras Zaatar is located at the southern end of MarsBareika Bay. This is comparatively rarely visited site and you are unlikely to meet schools of divers here.

Usually, the dive starts on a steep reef wall (point A on the diagram). As you move towards the corner, the wall becomes vertical. Grottoes and huge “wells” in the reef wall make the picture breathtaking and dramatic.

If the current allows, it is worth turning around from the corner and inspecting the wells at a shallower depth. A mesmerizing play of sunrays breaking through the holes in the reef plateau awaits you here.

Around the corner, the vertical wall becomes flatter. This is the beginning of the Marsa Bareika Bay.

Away from the corner of the reef, you can meet sharks of various species, including hammerheads. Here you can often see eagle rays and shoals of pelagic fish.

  • Recommended level diving on Ras Za'atar: Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent. If you are still an Open Water Diver, we advise you to take the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
  • When visiting grottoes and wells, be careful: the walls are covered with sharp shells. Various scorpion fishes can also be found in caverns. All hoses and gauges in your scuba gear must be properly secured.
  • On a vertical wall, it is easy to lose buoyancy and sink below the planned depth. Keep an eye on the depth gauge or computer and never dive deeper than your guide.
