SHARK YOLANDA REEF
In the very south of the Sinai Peninsula, where the waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Suez meet, two of the most popular reefs in Sharm El Sheikh - Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef rise to the surface.
The abundance of plankton and strong currents have created conditions for one of the most beautiful reefs in the world formation. Thousands of pelagic fish gather here from June to August, when the water temperature reaches +28 +30 degrees. They are followed by sharks of several species.
The Shark, Yolanda and Lesser Yolanda reefs are separated from the coastal reef by a beautiful shallow lagoon. The majestic vertical wall of Shark Reef goes to a depth of over 750 meters. Yolanda Reef is surrounded by a plateau with a wonderful coral garden with a steep cliff at a depth of 25-30 m.
The current will take you to the wreck of the Cypriot ship Yolanda, which crashed here in April 1980 on its way to Jordan. Hundreds of toilets, bathtubs, sinks, which made up the ship's cargo, are scattered on the sandy bottom. Among the pipes and containers, you can find the remains of a BMW 320 that belonged to the captain of the ship. These days, all the wreckage is colonized by marine life. Behave yourself and do not sit on the toilets when taking photos. Many of them are overgrown with fire corals!
After the crash, the ship stood upright, rising above the surface of the water. In 1987, waves pushed it from the plateau to a depth of 140 to 250 m.
